The second quarter of 2012 yielded some key shifts in hit songwriting Trends that went into shaping the 23 songs that landed in the Billboard Pop Songs top 10 during the quarter.

Amongst the categories most affected were primary instrumentation (songs utilizing a lone synth continued to decline in number,) lead vocal gender (women took over for the first time in over two years,) lyrical themes (there was lots of love and very little inspiration,) and most of all, primary sub-genre influences (for the first time in over a year and a half, Dance/Club influenced songs were no longer in the majority).
