Written, performed, and produced by the late, great, Prince Rogers Nelson, When Doves Cry is as every bit eclectic as the man himself. From its 33-second multi-part intro, to its wide-ranging mix of sub-genres, to its lack of a bass line, When Doves Cry pushed the boundaries of the mainstream music scene back in 1984, and continues to do so today.
However, for as much as Prince “broke the rules,” his work retained essential conventions that ensured a connection with mainstream audiences. It was his ability to both defy and embrace the conventional while remaining true to his unique artistry that set Prince apart from many of his contemporaries.
