‘Cold Water’ Deconstructed

Cold Water is the lead single from Major Lazer’s forthcoming album, Music Is The Weapon. It features a duet between Justin Bieber and MØ and was co-written by an all-star team of writers, including Benny Blanco, Diplo and Ed Sheeran among others. The song was released in July 2016 and quickly became a massive summer hit.

The success of Cold Water can be attributed in part to stellar craft, a strong blend of familiarity and originality, and good timing. Its infectious blend of tropical, dance/club and electropop influences were in tune with this summer’s hottest trends, but it’s the way the writers incorporated the unique “water” motif into the universal love/relationship theme that helped it stand out from the pack.

To-date, Cold Water has landed in the upper reaches of the Top 10 on almost 40 charts throughout the world, peaking at #1 on 20.

Cold Water Deconstructed takes an in-depth look at the songwriting and production techniques that made the song a hit.
